There were a handful of us – 5 (Me included) who got out a couple of times for a road hike exploration of things that are changing around here week by week!
This photo was one we took up Roundhouse Road (even though the roundhouse is pretty much no more after the flood from Hurricane Helene where water was up to the roof. SAD!) for a just shy of one mile hike to the county line sign dividing Grayson County, VA from Alleghany County, NC.
Much discussion over the different spellings of Alleghany occurred! It depends on where you are from.
But suffice it to say that on THIS side of the sign, we are firmly on NC ground.
Look close and you’ll see our stare down with a deer on the road. And after this week’s heavy rain, the roadside waterfall was really flowing. I love that sound.
Iris are blooming – domestic by the mailbox, and a clump of wild in the weeds. I guess this hike was brought to us by the color purple!
The day previous we had opted for Bear Branch to see if any cattle could be found. Cattle have quite a lot of acreage to roam, and sometimes they are over the hill and we don’t see any – but we lucked out on this sunny day.
A couple of bathing beauties!
Love the white face one!
Another part of the herd (or is it a different herd? Who knows!) were grazing away around the old tumble-down cabin on the rocks.
It was such a nice day that many of them were sunbathing – until we made noise and they got up and turned to look at us.
Well some of them were curious as to what we were doing on the road above.
And then we ran into Old Bossy – who had made her way to her solo grazing ground by the old 1958-ish car with tail fins, likely parked there to rust away since 1960-something.
Let’s face it – sometimes we ALL have to break away from the crowd for some solo recuperation time and to graze in peace. Munch on, Bossy!
Yesterday was a pedal to the metal day – everyone trying their best to complete quilt tops in time for yesterday’s over-the-porch-rail photo op. I’ll share those photos tomorrow –
This one didn’t quite make it to done, but I got this photo by text last night:
I texted back asking for a photo of the pattern cover, I know it’s a “Boston Commons” traditional qiult, but could be named something else by the maker. I’m waiting to hear back. I believe the edges get trimmed and borders are added.
More of what was underway in this corner!
I still see cat ears as the border on the nine patch one! LOL!
As for me? I finished all of the “dark only” ones I needed to make for my current recycled shirt string obsession quilt. But there are other variations to come, this quilt is a lot more to happen to it.
But I love these!
I needed something fairly brainless after so many quilts with a bazillion half-square triangles. I may call this one RESPITE. (Doubtful, but that’s what it feels like right now.)
And here’s something that came up on my Facebook feed yesterday. Alaska in 2015 – and Australia in 2025.
10 years older, a bit heavier (but not by too much) and settling into life in my 60s. It’s definitely good.

Quiltville Quote of the Day –
Stop messing with my colors!
We should be able to call a Purple Onion what it is!
This one made me chuckle.
