I had a couple of hours of available quilting time yesterday after finishing up things at the retreat while waiting for Chris’s Christmas in July group to arrive.
What can one do with a couple of hours?
How about quilt up a very small (26”) little quilt?
Some things just have to wait for the right time, and the right time evidently was yesterday.
Frakenbatting in the making!
I had a scrap that was long enough, but a bit too narrow, so I took a more narrow scrap of batting and zig-zagged it to the bigger piece.
My Rocketeer gets to come out to play every so often, just for this purpose.
I place her on her longest stitch and widest zig zag and with the edges barely overlapping just zig-zag those pieces together into a piece big enough for my little quilt. It took longer to thread the machine than it did to run this seam.
For those asking why I don’t use fusible to join batting…I just simply do not like glue on the inside of my quilt. Thread is easy. Zig-zag is sufficient, and the batting stays flexible.

So that whole “Won’t take long!” feeling? It ended just about the time I hit stop on recording…broken thread. Beep, beep, beep!
It happened 3 more times in a very short span of time which is a clue to me that it is time to change the needle and recheck the tension.
I eventually got all of that solved, but suffice it to say that when we make plans for “How long could it take?” The Universe accepts the challenge, laughing all the way.
After ll, the quilt is only about 26” – how long could it take?
(Hahahahahha!)
Trying to get a photo to show the color of the thread – it’s a golden sand.
It’s probably my favorite thread color for quilting scrappy things as it travels so well between the colors and the neutrals.
I love the texture! I made it as far as a trim up. Binding will happen today. I mean……How long could it take? (I know I’m going to be sorry I asked that! LOL!)
A special thank you is going out to Mary Lynn in So Cal for the wonderful scrap box of fabrics she sent. I love the neutrals and can’t wait to work them in! Thank you, thank you! There are also fun scrappy squares and pieces in that zip lock bag. Fun fun fun!
Last evening I began to add the long diagonal row to the hexie mothership. How far did I get?
This is going to take at least 4 evenings if not more.
(It is not a race. It is not a race.)
Still a long way to goo.
And honestly, it was more than 36” as the seam line is not straight, it goes up and down in a wavy pattern. The shortest distance is a straight line, and this is in no way a straight line.
But the funniest thing?
I posted “Evening number one of stitching this next diagonal row to the forever hexies mothership! ” with my progress photos to Facebook, and look what the AI is asking. LOL!!
What is a forever hexies mothership???
What is the purpose of a hexie mothership?
Oh, AI – those are questions we’d all love to know the answer to. LOL!
Chris’s group showed up right on time and there was much hustle and bustle and moving in of things and settling in about the time I headed home for the evening.
Today is a gorgeous day and I think they are taking me up on my offer of the park pass to go hiking in search of ponies this morning while the weather is cool and our humidity is low.
I’m anxious to hear what they’ve seen and found, and catch up on what their projects are.
There will be some sewing in the QPO studio – binding needs to go on the little quilt. (Though the hand stitching of said binding will wait until after I finish attaching this hexie row.)
Blue strings, anyone? Or do I go back to the “death by geese” min project I was working on before blue strings squirreled me away?
Our Abbeygate release was a hit! I’m so thrilled to hear that so many of you have been setting your scraps aside with this quilt in mind and I can’t wait to see what you do with this one.
