We all know it’s too hot. It’s uncomfortable, sweaty and anyone pretending otherwise is a liar. Electric fans are being dusted off, and the windows are being kept permanently open – and despite all of this, it’s still too warm to get a good night’s sleep.
Well, the solution to a bad night’s sleep is here. As it happens, to peacefully turn in for the night you’ve got to get yourself turned on – sleep expert James Wilson says that having sex could hold the answer to getting a better night’s sleep.
James – also known as The Sleep Geek – told The Daily Mirror: “Some of the biological processes around sex could negatively impact on sleep, particularly the rise in heart rate and release of adrenaline, especially if it is quite vigorous.
“But it also helps us feel emotionally connected, and an orgasm leads to the release of hormones like prolactin and oxytocin – the cuddle hormone.
“This makes us feel relaxed and calm, the perfect condition to be in to sleep well. It also reduces the levels of cortisol, the wake-up hormone that increases our stress levels.”
Good to know!
James also says that if you’re sleeping next to someone, the best thing to do to prevent overheating in this weather is to have a ‘separate sheet or duvet’ to prevent their body heat warming up your space in the bed.
Although you might just opt for kicking a leg out from under the covers, because nobody wants to have that classic ‘can we use separate duvets tonight?’ conversation that we all know and love, right?
To cool off before you go to sleep, James reckons you shouldn’t be taking ice cold showers or baths, either.
Instead, he says: “To drop our core temperature and help the process that helps us sleep, have a lukewarm bath or shower.”
The key, supposedly, is having a lukewarm shower – if it’s icy cool then the shock of the cold will actually wake you up and it’ll convince your body that it needs to raise its temperature.
In short, cold showers are not the way to go if you want a cool and calm night’s sleep.
Not only that, but you also shouldn’t put anything in the freezer to take to bed with you, whether that’s an ice pack or even putting your covers in the freezer. When they begin to defrost, it’ll create a watery mess on the bed, which is going to make you even more uncomfortable, and stop you getting your eight hours in.
So, the long and short of it is this: sex will help you get a good night’s sleep during a heatwave. If you have the energy.
